Swedish tunnel to get complete overhaul

Swedish contractor Peab has won a $42.3m contract from the Swedish Transport Administration to renovate the Tingstad Tunnel, which connects Hisingen to the Gothenburg mainland.

Built in 1968, the 455-metre-long tunnel is one of the most important road connections in western Sweden, with some 125,000 vehicles passing through it every day.

Peab will replace the surface of its walls and roof and repave the road with the intention of extending the tunnel’s life by 30-50 years.

Most of the technical installations such as lighting, ventilation and fire alarms will be replaced, and a new system to drain the rainwater that collects will be installed.

Work starts in the spring of 2022 and is expected to be complete around the end of 2023.
